Cost of Living in Rushmoor

We produced our “Cost of Living in Rushmoor” report earlier this year, based on surveys and interviews undertaken by our volunteers.  The report highlights the difficulties some people and families have in coping with the cost of living in the Borough, and builds on the evidence highlighted by our advice team.

Key findings were:

  • Although many people feel they are comfortably off, they acknowledge that for a significant number of residents this is not the case.
  • Families with children find it particularly difficult to manage the cost of living, including the expense of school uniform and school trips.
  • The costs of housing (mortgage and rents) is a key source of pressure on local people.
  • Worrying about the cost of living has a negative impact on people’s mental health.

This report was compiled before the Covid19 pandemic closed down much of the economy, which will put even more pressure on people and families in the area. Our original plans were to present our report at a public event, which would have been an opportunity to share ideas and come together with proposals for the future.  Obviously with Covid-19, this has not been possible, but we nevertheless felt it was important to ensure the findings are widely known.

As we move out of lockdown, and the economic challenges ahead become clear, we hope the lessons from our research will be helpful.  In particular, we hope the findings can support local plans to rebuild resilience among our residents in the post-Covid economic situation. We hope you will find it a useful insight into the local economy.

We are committed to ensuring people can continue to access the advice and help they need from us when they most need it: see our “contact us” page for the latest information on how to access our service.
